Well here in New Brunswick that includes June. This morning it was -2c with a heavy frost on the lawns. I decided it was time to turn the heel on a sock of very simple design using <a href="http://peacefleece.com/history.php" target="_blank">Peace Fleece</a> wool that I bought a few years ago. I had bought 3 skeins with the vendor saying she would post another 6 skeins and would be in touch - never heard from her. This is a heavy wool similar to <a href="http://www.briggsandlittle.com/" target="_blank">Briggs & Little </a>Tuffy- it is pretty with specks of orange and yellow but is rough and I know will felt in an a second so I doubt they will be given away. Work socks for the winter and now that the heel is turned I'll finish the first sock maybe tonight and get on the the second one before the weekend.<br />

Sampling is something I have been doing for just about every fibre technique that I dabble in. Knitting is no different and I find saves me a lot of time. I have the opportunity to knit up a pair of socks using <a href="http://www.tessyarns.com/" target="_blank">Tess's Designer Yarn </a>- A super wash Merino . At first I was going to use #3mm but decided to try out a #2mm first to see what would happen. When knitting in the round I also knit the samples in the round as my tension is very different in the flat. I'm glad I started with the 2, these give a tighter tension so will give me the size of stitch I'm looking for. I really don't care for strip yarn but this hand dyed yarn has the measurements very well calculated and the greys seem to be coming out very even. We shall see......</div>

Embroidery has been a passion of mine for a number of years.
I do have difficulty following someone else instructions so I have been
designing my own work for some time now. I use my designs in any technique that
I am working on. A few years ago I was commissioned to design a pattern for
another Embroider. As I gathered my notes and prepared drawings I found I was
leaning to the very old style of Jacobean, so much can be put in to the
motifs. A few months ago I joined a Rug
hooking group. I really am very new to the technique but while visiting the
group earlier this spring I learnt it was an anything goes group and one member
had a pile of shredded silk ready to use in her art piece. I knew then I would
be comfortable in the group. They go from the very primitive to the contemporary.
In mid-December there was a gift exchange which was to be something one made, in an 8”x8” format – Could be anything but had to have fibre. I
decided to use one of my Jacobean style motifs and see what I could do with it.
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
End results, I was pleased with it . Not a great picture and the piece was not blocked or finished at the time. It went to the gift exchange and I forgot to taken a better picture.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
The basic technique of hooking is simple - using a small
hook – you pull a piece of yarn or strip of fibre up threw a loosely woven
ground fabric that is held taught in whatever way you can get it tight and
still work in the design –. The
difficult part – getting loops going in the direction you want them to, keeping
the loops all the same height ( if that is the look you want) – deciding what
size strips to use which can be thin yarn to ½” strips that you cut with
scissors a rotary blade or a cutter ( if you have one). The most difficult
issue for me, and it is for everything I do, is colour. In the 8x8 for the flower
I used an expensive Japanese wool yarn that looked good in the skein but was
ugly knitted up. -I really don’t care for stripped yarn- But by cutting out the
colours I wanted to use it did work well in the motif. For the back ground I
used Briggs & Little – heavy weight - that I had hand dyed a few
years ago. I loved the variations of the colour and by hooking in circles or
following the shape of the leaves I was not getting to blotchy. This was a
learning piece. I discovered when the back ground was half done that the tones
of blues were to close to the greens and light purples and all nearly blended together. But I did
enjoy the meditative process of the hooking and continue to work on another
of a much simpler design.<o:p></o:p></div>

Dec 31st
2017 – Last day of a another busy year. I don’t make new year’s resolutions . It is not something I gave much
thought about as I have always had a list of things to do and it doesn’t matter
what time of year it is things do need to be done. But a number of years ago I
got in to the habit of cleaning up on the Dec 31st . The tree would
come down, things would get sorted of what to keep and what go out the door (donations).
I adopted the philosophy that if I was busy and productive on the 31st
going in the New Year then it would reflex on the future months. Bit
superstitions but it seems to work for me. This year the tree came down on the 28th.......</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
December was a busy month with a number of Life distractions
and to keep my mind focused I started to knit a pair of red and grey socks – </div>

One leg is done with heel turned yet to go in to the gusset. I haven’t
decided yet if it should be solid red or a strip- I’m using wool yarn that was
given to me so trying to make it work. I call them Barn Boot Socks something
for the recipient to wear in her barn boots. I have been knitting sock for just
about 5 years now and have lost counted on how many pair I have made.A number
of pair were done tops down with turned heels then I taught myself “toes up
with afterthought heels”. I also taught myself the same method to knit 2 at a
time but didn’t find it any faster only that they came out the same size. This
month I also knitted a toque in a very bulky yarn and a beautiful lace scarf
which I dyed the yarn using marigolds (frozen from this summer). But before the
month was over I decided I needed a pair of mittens. My fingers wear frozen
before I got half way to coop in my “expensive -?? type gloves”. This morning
my fingers were nice and toasty at -22 with wind chill of -31 in my hand
knitted mitts knitted with<span id="goog_1610106110"></span> <a href="http://www.legacylanefibermill.ca/" target="_blank">Legacy Lane</a><span id="goog_1610106111"></span> yarn of 75% alpaca, 15% merino, and 10%

<div class="MsoNormal">
This is the 3rd pair of mitts for me and the
first that I followed direction. I don’t follow directions well so reading
knitting patterns can be a major challenge. This pattern was a freebie on line
by a Ellen Mason I don’t recall what web site I got it from but they were called
“Fried Chicken Mittens”. The mittens
were designed to have a gusset thumb and after knitting these up I can’t see
every going back to another way. The pattern called for bulky yarn and a #8 or
5mm needle. From experience I know my tension is looser then most and I always
have to go down a size or 2.<br />

understand what the purpose of the “k2tog” in making a design was for. Over all
very happy with them and plan on knitting a couple pair more for just incase. I’m

A long time ago in a far away land I thought I would try my
hand at photography. I bought a 35mm Olympus camera with a couple extra lenses. This
was before everyone became experts with a digital cell phone. It was a time
that one had to not only know the equipment well but also subject, lighting , composition,
and a long list of things that I was too impatient to learn . But I
did practice as much as I could and spent a small fortune on having crappy
photos developed. I found a few of my favorites this morning that I think were my best so
decided to scan them in to share . Knowing what I know now composition
could have been much better especially the one with the barn boards. But
leaning towards the fibre knowledge I have this one is calling out to be reproduced
in lots of textures.<br />

The Challenge is coming along and I am pleased with the out come. I was asked to alter a prom dress by removing the zipper and putting the loops in. At first I thought I could buy the loops but what I purchased I wasn't happy with the look - so out came the tape and cord and some paint dyes and very happy with the results. In the below picture the basting is still in and I am hand stitching everything in place - I prefer the look. I was also able to paint dye some ribbon but not sure if it work yet.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This winter I decided to focus on another project that I started 23 years ago! A hand pieced sampler quilt from the very first workshop I had attended. The quilt is only a twin size so really not that big and I am hand quilting in a hoop having based the whole thing also 23 years ago. It looks like Biscuit has claimed it for herself as she is often under or on it when I have it out to work on. It really is a slow go but I enjoy the calmness of handwork.</div>

First step is construct and dye a required item.<br />

This a Murano hand blown glass that was made for her in the late 60s on a visit to the Murano Island in Italy. It is the perfect size to hold 4 balls of Tess Design yarns from Portland Maine that were gifts from my sister Murratte. The yarn is very fine and at the moment this is just a sample of what I have in mind . Since the picture I have already gone from 2,5 needles to 3.5 which gives a better drape to the fabric.<br />

Love to muck about with dyes to see what colours comes up. A couple years ago I painted a massive amount of silk ribbon. Some turned out lovely- others not so much but I can still work with them. I am also in the process of opening up a shop on Esty. A little confusing at the moment but hope to open in the next few days.<br />

Sounds a little sad but not, the colour inspired a
nap quilt. I don’t consider myself as a true quilter- Yes I cut up material and
stitch it back together but I do prefer a very free form and rarely follow the
rules. Not that rules are a bad thing and I think it is important to know them
so you can break any when needed to. My preferred method is whole cloth
quilting where I sketch, stitch, paint, dye, burn, and other types of fiber
distressing techniques.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Caribbean Blue has come about due to 2 projects I am in the
middle of and have come to a creative hurdle. So to take a break and re think
a few thing but stay in the studio and still be creative I went digging threw
the fabric stash- I find pulling out yardage of colours can be very inspiring.
A small Ziploc bag stuffed with pieces of colour caught my attention. It was a
gift from a sister’s trip to the Caribbean a year or so ago. She knows me well
and I was delighted to see these bits of light weight cotton stamped with a variety
of motifs from the region in a batik resist. <o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
There were a mixture of sizes some very small and others not
quite a fat quarter. I think these were left over bits from a dress/ accessories
shop as a couple shapes were definitely from an armhole. My goals were to use
all the material in the most economical way to reduce any waste. My second goal
to work quickly, and third make something useful. I started out thinking I may
have enough for a bag or a pillow but soon discover there was much more I could
do.<o:p></o:p></div>

So then I decided to add a bit of "sand" from my stash.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Not to over think the process and needing to add some width plus a little more length I proceed to use up the left overs were they would fit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The bump to the left is a cat- I'm happy with the end results and of course the pictures does not do it just. It is a bit long but will have to square it off after it has been quilted I was pleased that it is fairly even which means my sewing skills are improving. I'll machine quit it and have a few thoughts of what I will do.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I pieced the binding and everything is ready to baste- I have a pretty blue flannel for the backing and I didn't move the basting boards to far so maybe on the weekend I'll get that started.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I achieved my goal- it was quick, useful and very little waste- The pile on the left was used for the binding, the center pile will go for stuffing in pet pillows and the pile tot the right will go to a friend who makes miniature quits.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I started on Friday afternoon and worked about 3 hours a day got it all done Monday afternoon - So happy dance for me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'm still in the early stages of this latest fiber technique that I am learning but so far I find it a very satisfying activity and most time happy with end result. I have not challenged my self with anything of great difficulty besides reading basic pattern and charts and keeping the tension between knit purl. I do like to knit basic socks- socks that I start from the toe up with an after thought heel. I taught myself ( books, you tube)- knitted lots of samples, experimented with toes up 2 at a time and wrote and taught a 4 class workshop. I like the knit 2, purl 1 rib for the leg - gives good stretch. I knit Continental style so my tension is a bit looser then what is called for in a pattern so I use less stitches that are called for. I do a sample normally and count my stitches. I have been using the Paton Kroy yarn for a while so I know what will work. I don't care for this very popular self stripping yarn and once I use up what I have in my stash I'll find some thing else. I'm interested in doing a bit of trial with a lacy pattern and have started a pair of socks in a deep pink for myself -summer socks- but I think I may have to start over- which is nothing new for me to do.</span><br />

I have a number of goals and one is continue to blog, which I have not done for some time. At the moment I'll stick with this template but I would like to find something a little different -a cleaner look. My thoughts today are to reorganize, reduce, reuse, simplify is my word for the year at the mom</span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">ent.</span></span><br />

The picture was taken on Sunday and I still have a few things left to do, the label and sleeve . Contact me if you are interesting in purchasing a ticket or 2.</span><br />

way of honouring Mom and my way is donating time and fabric. The wall hanging
that I made last year sold at a quilt show and all proceeds went to the LLS.
This year Murratte is running in April and there are no quilt shows in the near

I didn’t realise how much
work I could get done with a very tight deadline.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Mind you, I seem to be more productive with making
then in design but over all I was pleased with end results. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I’m a new knitter and managed to knit 2 pair
of wool socks, 4 scarves plus 2 quilts one a large lap and the other will
cover the top of a queen size bed. With the house still under construction I am
working were ever I can find a comfortable space. A lesson from the cats, take

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">This quilt was started by my Mother a few years ago. She hand pieced rows of 6" blocks then added strips of yellow.It was the last thing she worked on. I rearranged things a bit and put it together as a quilt as you go. With a cotton batting and flannel backing It ended up being the largest and heaviest thing I have worked on. There are still a few strips left so I am planning a couple other things to use them in . My younger sister put first dibs when Mom had started so the quilt is for her. Thanks to the great winter we have been having she hasn't seen it yet</span></div>

This started out as a mono print with procion dyes on cotton- I doodled all over ( with do set idea of where it was going -very free form) - I then random hand stitched in grey rayon thread and after that I machine stitched with black polyester thread. I cut out a section for the SAQA Atlantic trunk show that I call "Contemplating" and the rest I cut up then collage back together and machine stitched with a zig zag. This one I call "Meadow's Edge" . Both will be mated and framed .<br />

</span>has opened at the SJAC , I can move forward on to other projects that
have been put on hold mainly because the lack of space to work in. <a href="http://www.thesearsvilleproject.blogspot.com/">Renovations</a>
are moving ahead just not fast enough for me. My studio is still in boxes and I
was using my future office as a storage area and a small bedroom as a work
space. It didn’t work - so..... I moved everything out of the office in to the bedroom
and sent up a good spot to create for both the computer and sewing machines in
the office . Its not perfect but will do until studio space becomes available.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I switch to using this exercise ball a few months ago I find

I haven't really found the time to work at my first love so when I was asked to teach a workshop for the local chapter of the Embroiderers Association of Canada , Pleasant Vally Stitchers, I didn't give it a second thought. Some where in my 2 blogs there is a picture of a an Echineaca that I have been meaning to do something with it. It was the perfect subject to experiment with thread shading. It really isn't the tradition thread shading as I introduce the students to using the stem stitch to fill in and shade .I love the affect ,and the stitch allowed for the little ridges that you see on the Echineaca . I took artistic licence and worked the head in rows of Turkey knots. The class has two weeks to work on samples and if they are comfortable with that they will work on the pattern which they paint the ground with Dye-na-Flow. It was a busy 3 hours but fun and I have a couple of surprises for them in Part 2.. <br />
Steps have been upload to this blog to help with the embroidery<br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">The start of a new year is always exciting , A list is made of all the great ideas that have formulated over the last few weeks and also of all the things that were not finished the year before. Which brings me to the "make a Goal List". This year is going to be as busy as every with the work continuing on the farm ( and the hopes of moving soon) but I also have 2 exhibits to work on. One is with the Canadian Fiber Arts Group Articulation and the British Material Girls which is called Bridging Waters. The exhibit spent 2012 touring around England and will now tour a few places in Canada. It will be in Winnipeg in May , Victoria in September and Saint John NB at the Saint John Art Center from November to end Jan 2014. I'll have one piece (maybe 2 ) for the Canadian Trip but for the Saint John Exhibit I have 3 finished with one more pending.I will also do a couple Artist talks while it is at SJAC. The above pictures are of the piece that is on tour and close up . It s hand felted with beading and embroidery. I love hand stiching in to felt.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New;">So my second exhibt is with a friend here in Sussex .We have the Gallery booked for the month of October. We are still working out details but I think this will be a fun project </span><br />

I hadded some felt to make book marks and pins some of which I sold but the little wall hanging I decided to keep for my self</span><br />

want to do. I try and update the blog on a regular bases and I often will link
to the Needle & Thread net work once a week for the Work in Progress. Last
week I posted some new projects I am working on and happy to announce that they
are moving a long . But after reading the blog “from head to fiber” who showed
pictures of a cleanup I thought i would stop and tidy up my studio space. I use
to have over 600 sq feet but more than half is packed up and sitting in a
future spot <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>waiting for that right
moment ( the big move). So I now have to make everything work in the space I
have which is not a bad size but I do have to be versatile .</span><br />

Really it is an old project , a commission piece that I have been working on
far to long. The request had no deadline which is not a good thing for me so my
deadline for this is Dec 30 of this year 2012. Put it in writing and it is more
likely to happen I was told.<br />
I have designed and redesigned and was never happen with the outcome until
recently when I tweaked a few lines by removing them. I'm impressed and did the
little happy dance when I enlarge the sketch on to the paper for the mock up
and pattern placement. It will be the largest art quilt to date for me starting
at 50" X 75" and will be cut down some as I stitch and embellish. My original
plan was to paint, dye, stitch, but have decided to layer and stitch with
batiks and over dyes, some being my own. The painting and dyes may still apply
but we shall see as everything is moved around.<br />
<br />
First up is to see what materials I have in the cupboard so pulled all what
I thought may work and layer them out for values. I may need more. And I do have access to a shop about a hour away that specilizes in Batiks ,<a href="http://www.rivergallery.ca/">The River Gallery</a> , and I am due for a day trip<br />

I have another project that I started the other day , a comfort quilt
